KITL Smart Room Exploration

New Collaborative Group within ENCORE - researcher/teachers/students within digitial arts community

Goal:

To see how multicultures, different socio-economic backgrounds, various experiences can come together to help improve a final workshop learning workshop - for M3F students

The final workshop will be helpd at the MARS collaboration centre and will allow students from Hong Kong and Toronto connect and present to other students (from Toronto primarily) during the actual festival. The workshop is student constructed based on their own knowledge and understanding. Their interests will drive the workshop itself.

How presence as the students create the workshop - provides unique opportunities for evaluating the potential of this learning experience.

What:

Students from Hong Kong and Canada would get together virtually in the KITL lab space, (and comparable facility over in HK) to meet, plan, demo their media, photography, image manipulation, podcasting, etc...

Limitation of the technology within the KILT lab - i.e. only photoshop limited version (Light). This limits the photoshop workshop - however the students will recognize their audience (students) to come to the festial and learn about photoshop - Grade 9 appeal - or primary group

Schedule and software on computer with LCD projector...

How:

Students here can project their work via the Thunder System, and also connect via video conference. Students can create white boards in Thunder, and edit those from HK or Toronto.

Preliminary meeting at OISE/UT KILT lab - Feb 13th, 1-3pm

On-line live workshop meeting - with video conferencing and thunderboard system - Feb 27th (Tuesday) however needs to be moved to March 1st and 2nd...

Take-Home:

White board could be structured to help giude what students add to them (major themes for your presentations, media approaches, issues, etc. (see notes) ...

Please feel free to add.

Technology of Room (affordances):

When:

Feb 13th - preliminary meeting: 15 students

Need to check on:

  • The technical specifications of the room – the video conference need a meeting with Scott.
    10 computers (tablet) with photoshop)...
  • Will be imaged shortly (by scott)
  • use of macromedia breeze for video conferencing
  • from Hong Kong - four computers, four lcds to simulate the KITL room interaction
  • Confirm dates with John
  • Toronto time: 6-7pm live Hong Kong: 6-7am in the morning.

(coping with overtime costs).

  • Preliminary agendas
  • Design of activities.

Other comments:

  • Hong Kong kids have submitted to M3F (40 pieces or so)
  • altough two of the students did come last year - gave a speech at the gala. This way students want to come to Toronto to not only submit but also present in workshops.

M3F Workshop Experience Trial - KITL (Feb 23th)

  • This was a opportunity to test the equipment and the software.
  • It simulated a senario from Hong Kong and Toronto (where students pretended to be students from Hong Kong)
  • The students worked on ideas and were supposed to give impressions (visual and text) of not only Toronto, but Hong Kong.
