Jim has asked me to set up one of the Mac Pro in ENCORE lab as a backup server so that we can backup our research files on it. I have setup the media production machine (the one in ENCORE lab now) for this purpose. My previous suggestion was using Fugu or other FTP software to upload files. However, this is not convenient to use. Jim suggested to set the system so that each user can access his/her own folders on the server (remote folders) as local folders on his/her laptop. I think the best way is mapping directory on the ENCORE server onto the desktop of a laptop.
As everyone is using Leopard, thus this page will only give the instruction on how to mapping ENCORE server directory on Leopard. If you need to do the same thing on Windows machine, please let me know. It requires server-side setup.
1. Start Safari and enter "afp://baci.oise.utoronto.ca" in the address bar. Do not use Firefox, as it does not support AFP (Apple Filing Protocol). After you press the "enter" button, you will see a window like Figure 1. Please wait for the the next window like Figure 2 to appear.

2. In the window, select "Registered User", input your username and your password, check "Remember this password in my keychain" if you want. Click "Connect".
3. On the next window like Figure 3, select your name and click "OK". Do not select the one with you name and "Public Folder".

4. When the connection is done, you will see the "Finder" window with your folders on the ENCORE server displayed. (see Figure 4) At this point, you will be able to use the folders on the ENCORE server as a local disk on your laptop.

5. Press down "alt" key and the Apple key simultaneously, and drag the icon of your remote disk to you desktop. You will create an alias (or shortcut in Windows term). You can change the name of this alias. Next time when you need to access your remote folders, just double-click this alias.

If you do not do the last step, then every time you need to use your remote folders on ENCORE server, you need to do the above 4 steps.
