Functional Taxonomy

Capture and Transmit information/data

Students should be able to capture or input a variety of information directly on the devices (images, sounds, text) and either keep a series of instances on the device itself or transmit each individual instance to a server

Share, sort, and retrieve information

Students should be able to talk to a main sever and retrieve information that both they have uploaded, and potentially that of other members of their team/group/class/school - this information should also be sortable in some fashion, depending on the use/needs of the particular student (the same information could be very useful for a student studying architecture, and one studying climate change, but each one would probably look for the information differently)

Visualization of information

It should be possible for the device to display the information in different ways depending on the use needs of the students

  • Overlays on maps for geographical/physical understanding of the information
  • Basic list creation for quick viewing
  • Concept mapping to understand idea creation/formation around topics/across classes

Locational Awareness

The device should be able to understand where it is either

  1. Within a larger geographical space (such as a city)
    • This would allow students to GPS tag information to aid in the share/sort/retrieve and visualization functions
  2. Within a small more compact space (such as a classroom)
    • This could help with positioning and organizing information in the smart classroom - potentially allowing for changing the informational landscape within the room depending on where the individual student is, either in the room itself or in relation to other students in the room
